Craig's Pop Life 11.11.22
Hey, everybody! Welcome to another edition of Craig’s Pop Life, a Black gay excursion into pop culture. It’s giving content, hunny!
Hope you had a great week. Shoutout to my new subscribers…
I was so touched by how well people responded to the radio interview w/ Essex, Ron, & Mrs. Beam. I decided to pull some other Essex stuff out the archive, including a profile I wrote about him for The Advocate in 1992. It was so cool being able to write about a friend, who meant so much to me personally, professionally, and spiritually. I’ll discuss this in more detail when I upload the interview tape. Coming soon; stay subscribed!
Essex Hemphill x Jim Marks, The Advocate (May 25. 1987)
Essex Hemphill x Craig Seymour, The Advocate (June 2, 1992)
“The demographic breakdown of who did and didn’t vote for and against [Stacey] Abrams tells us what we already know. Meaningful, positive change cannot fall entirely on Black people, and it shouldn’t have to.” - Jemeelah Nasheed
Did y’all see Chaka Khan on the Jennifer Hudson show? It was very entertaining, especially for a person who simply loves watching Ms. Khan exist. She tells a great story about the first time she met Aretha Franklin. It begins with Ms. Franklin sayin’, “Oh, you that girl my kids won’t take off the radio.”
Toward the end, when JHud gives her gift, Ms. Khan says what will become my new motto as I turn 54 later this month: “I’m gonna cherish this for life…what’s left.”
Anyway, you can see the whole interview here.

This year has been a mutha! Lost one of my closest friends & my grandmother. (Old school Black folx can view the funeral program below.)
I also got pneumonia (for the second time in life) & had surgery on my peen (see previous letters). Yet my faith is stronger than ever. I truly do believe that…
Thanks for hanging out again. I hope you enjoyed the letter. Until next week, be cool, be kind, be creative, be yourself. Love, Craig
